Random Team Generator

Shuffle participants into balanced random teams from a line-by-line list.

Create teams

Add one participant per line. Empty lines do not count, and duplicate names stay as separate participant entries.

0 normalized participants

Use 2 to 200 participants. Keep each name at 100 characters or fewer.

Use at least 2 teams. The team count can equal the participant count.

How the random team generator works

Enter one participant per line, choose the number of teams, and generate a shuffled team assignment. Blank lines are ignored, leading and trailing spaces are trimmed, and duplicate names remain separate participant entries.

Participants are shuffled with Fisher-Yates, then distributed across teams in order. When the participant count is uneven, earlier teams may receive one extra participant, and team sizes differ by no more than one.

Common use cases

  • Create casual activity groups.
  • Divide workshop participants.
  • Form classroom practice teams.
  • Split people for low-stakes games.

Privacy

Team generation happens locally in your browser. Participant names and generated results are not intentionally saved to localStorage, placed in the URL, sent to a server, or tied to an account.

Frequently asked questions

How are uneven teams handled?

Participants are shuffled first, then distributed so team sizes differ by no more than one. Earlier teams may receive the extra participant.

Can I create more teams than participants?

No. The team count must be at least two and cannot be greater than the number of valid participants.

Are duplicate participant names merged?

No. Duplicate names remain separate entries, which is useful when two people share a name or an entry should appear more than once.
